About Us

Kip McGrath Nelson was one of the original New Zealand franchises, beginning with the introduction of the KMEC system into NZ in 1990. Current director Claire Alderson and her husband John moved from top jobs in large Auckland primary schools to enjoy the climate, art and ambience of one of the prettiest parts of the South Island.

John retired to an advisory role for the Centre in 2002 and Paul Prangley joined Claire as co-Director. The centre moved to its current site in 2004 and now benefits from a large building, with plenty of free parking just off the main arterial route of Waimea Road.

Claire has had many successful years in the school system as teacher, syndicate leader and then Deputy Principal, plus years as a Special Needs Teacher concentrating on reading. Her interest in this field has strengthened over the years and she actively researches the latest methods and thinking on the reading/language process. Several initiatives unique to

the Nelson Centre have been introduced because of this ongoing passion to help children learn and enjoy the reading experience.

Paul is an Educational Psychologist with over 20 years experience in education, first as a secondary teacher, then Special Needs teacher and Registered Psychologist. Paul has worked as Psychologist in Dunedin, South Auckland, Nelson/West Coast and for 6 years in North Borneo. FUTURE PROOF Ltd. Is a company formed to run both the Kip McGrath franchise and also a selection of programmes to help those with reading and learning needs. Together Paul and Claire bring their wide experience in children’s learning together with current and ongoing research to provide individualised programmes for all students, from struggling to normal to gifted, and all are welcomed to the Future Proof Kip McGrath Centre Nelson.

Our Educational Team

The Future Proof Kip McGrath Education Centre’s tutors are an exceptional team who provide caring support to all students – from those needing extra Maths or English tutoring to students wanting to push themselves a little harder with our Extension Programs. All of the Centre’s tutors are hand-picked and are fully qualified Teachers with impressive experience. (Currently our small team has over 100 years successful classroom experience!!)

Our Teaching Philosophy

The Future Proof Nelson Kip McGrath Education Centre provides a positive and supportive learning environment that promotes self-esteem, boosts every child’s confidence, and helps them achieve their personal best. The team’s goal is to make learning fun!

We are especially interested in promoting self-motivation and pride in the student’s own work. We help with ‘metacognition’ – helping the student appreciate not only WHAT to learn but also HOW to learn.

Other Programmes

• SPELLING – a particular specialty at FPKMEC is a custom designed spelling programme targeted at year 7-10 students in readiness for NCEA years. We offer intensive spelling assessment and cognitive strategies for learning words and feel these skills are imperative to master BEFORE the NCEA years.
• We offer a comprehensive Educational testing service using internationally standardised assessments, and culminating in a full written report with suggestions. Various levels of testing are available to parents or schools, depending on the information needed.
• DYSLEXIA. We make use of our on-site specialists and also offer internationally recognised programmes for boosting some of the visual and auditory skills and perceptions needed for good reading. Dyslexic students are missing some of these important basic skills and our extra programmes help remediate this.
• Cellfield® and Irlen® programmes have a wide research base and high efficacy ratings.
• Ask about other intensive and individualised programmes available through our resident Educational Psychologist and our Specialist Teacher.
